Building Homes While Building Community

In honor of both Women History Month and Women in Construction Week in March, 10 employees from our Sacramento office participated in a Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build day in Folsom, Calif. on Friday, March 21.

This marked the team’s second year participating in Women Build day, with team members working on 10 new homes for families in need. They measured, cut and installed siding, performed caulking and painted home exteriors (even going up three floors of scaffolding) under the guidance of several site leaders. But the event was more than just a construction project; it was an opportunity for employees to work together outside the office.

“I’ve always wanted to participate in a Habitat for Humanity function, and when I saw this build, I was all over it,” said Karla Schmidt, senior project accounting specialist, Western Operations. “Every walk of life was out there volunteering. In addition, two of the single mothers receiving Habitat homes were there working on the homes. It was an honor to work side by side with them.”

Similarly, Makayla Oei, director of project development, has always wanted to support Habitat for Humanity as she said the organization inspires her.

“Doing so in a community (Folsom) where the Boldt team is also providing a building (Sutter Care Center at Broadstone project) made the experience even more impactful,” said Makayla. “We had a great time working together while giving back to the community.”

Women Build brings together women from all backgrounds, ages, skill sets and industries to make a difference with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento. They help to build and repair much-needed affordable housing in the Sacramento region.

Thank you to everyone who participated!
