STAAT Mod Critical Care Units Receive Honorable Mention in Fast Company’s 2020 Innovation by Design
(APPLETON, Wis.) Oct. 12, 2020–The STAAT Mod™ critical care units, which are fabricated by The Boldt Company and designed by HGA, have been recognized in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards for 2020 in the Health and Spaces & Places categories.
The awards, published in the October/November 2020 issue of Fast Company, recognize people, teams, and companies solving problems through design. One of the most sought-after design awards in the industry, Innovation by Design is the only competition to honor creative work at the intersection of design, business, and innovation.
The Boldt Company and HGA created the STAAT Mod to address the health and safety of patients and healthcare workers affected by COVID-19. Drawing upon a collaborative and committed team of over 80 people working remotely and virtually, both companies were able to rapidly design, prototype and model a modular and prefabricated facility solution. Experts, such as critical care nurses trained in COVID-19 protocols, hospital environment specialists in infection control and Lean process engineers, tested the product in virtual reality simulation. The quality of the environment produced by the STAAT Mod design directly impacts the quality of care and outcome for the patient.
“This national award recognizes the rapid collaboration and genuine teamwork between our two organizations to solve an immediate need for hospitals during the pandemic,” said Tom Boldt, CEO of The Boldt Company. “The innovation fostered during a time of crisis will continue to provide fast, high quality solutions for healthcare.”
In May 2020, Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center became the first hospital in the nation to install STAAT Mod modular units.
“We need innovative design more than ever, and the 2020 honorees have brought creativity, inventiveness, and humanity to address some of the world’s most pressing problems, including the global pandemic, racial injustice, and economic inequality. Together these entries offer a glimpse into a future that is more inclusive, more accessible, and more just,” said Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company.
